Hello!
Who are we? We are a small group of teenagers that started out as a hobby breeder in early 2009 with plenty of personal experience from prior rodent pets and then became a full-blown rodentry over time due to our love for improving the species and
studying them in depth. We focus on breeding healthy, happy, lovable animals that also
have good type and markings for show. Our goal is to be able to provide
healthy, long lived rats to the average pet owner or beautiful mice to those special people who would like to
show.
Our animals: Our colony is healthy and we have been very lucky to have our girls be tumor-free. We are currently working on producing not only friendly rats with great type that could potentially compete in show, but also lovely show-type mice in difficult and fun varieties, like Caracul.
What type of rats and mice do we breed? We breed two different lines of rats, both of which are inter-breedable. We breed Beige Capped Hairless Dumbos for hairless lovers and, with a special priority in mind, cancer patients. We believe that the red eyed dilute gene looks the most stunning on a hairless rat, so black hairless will be much rarer here at LDR. We also breed Cap-stripes. LDR’s Cap-Stripe line has proven to be very different than those with the restriction gene previously known. We have suspicions that they are connected to Chinchilla. In regards to the mice, we breed three varieties that are a challenge to produce great animals in because we are the only people in our area working on them. These were all started in pet stores, so you'll see them improve as time goes on.
Why do you breed marked rats and mice instead of pointed or purely selves? We breed Cap-Stripes rats and Pied mice. Even though we love a lot of the other marked rats, Cap-Stripes are just stunning to us. Sadly, it is a very misunderstood variety and can be difficult to reproduce. Exploring a not very well known area of rat genetics intrigues us to fill that gap. We hope to someday standardize the Cap-Stripe marking and release our lines into the public. The Pied mice are just so much more of a challenge to breed than Self, that we simply couldn't resist. We want to put ourselves to the test as breeders and this is how we do it.
I am a breeder that is interested in one of your cap-stripes. How can I get a breeder’s contract from you for them? Right now, both our hairless line and our cap-stripe line is off-limits to any breeders until we get a pedigree formed of at least seven generations on each line. This is simply for safety of the animals and the quality in the line. Both lines came from pet stores and we want to make sure that any health problems that could be present are noted by us. Especially as Cap-Stripes are a new variety, they are extremely delicate and do not need to fall into the wrong hands.
